The Three Little Javelinas, The Tortoise and the Jackrabbit and A very Hairy Christmas

By Susan Lowell, illustrated by Jim Harris

Susan Lowell was born in Chihuahua, Mexico in 1950. As a fourth-generation Arizonan, I come from a long line of prospectors, explorers, ranchers, farmers, and school-marms. I began to write at the age of seven, which I made my own little books with Scotch tape and crayons, and I have never stopped. By now I’ve officially published fifteen books, but they are not more real than the tiny scotch-taped ones–to me, at least!

I was educated at Stanford and Princeton Universities and I’ve worked as a newspaper reporter, a college professor, an editor and publisher, a rancher, and a freelance writer for adults and children. Ranging from fractured fairytales to serious family history, my books have grown out of my deep roots in the American West.  My husband, Ross Humphreys, and I own Treasure Chest Books/Rio Nuevo Publishers, a distributor and publisher of books of the West.  With our two daughters now away at college, we divide our time between Tucson, Arizona and our ranches near the Mexican border.

The Three Little JavelinasJim Harris is best known for his detailed, realistic and often humorous, illustration style. Jim’s paintings and illustrations have won numerous awards, including New York Society of Illustrators’ Silver Medal and Awards of Merit and the Communication Arts’ Award of Excellence. His children’s books include best-sellers with over three million copies in print.

Jim's clients include National Geographic Books, Children’s Television Workshop, Federal Bar Association, Danbury Mint, Penquin, Private Practice, The Mind’s Eye, Bassmaster, RAZ, Siver Burdett & Ginn, Argus Communications, Pelican Publishing, Houghton Mifflin, Better Homes & Gardens Books, IBM, Tommy Nelson, Bradford Exchange, National Wildlife Federation, Ottenheimer Publishing, Consumer’s Digest, CRACOM, The Franklin Mint, Harcourt Publishing, Scripture Press, Northland/Rising Moon, PRANA, Phi Delta Kappan, Review & Herald, Concordia, Banker’s Monthly, Andrews McMeel, Chicago Tribune, etc.

The Adventures of Salt & Soap at Grand Canyon

By Lori April Rome, illustrated by Tanja Bauerle

The true story of two puppies who wandered into the Grand Canyon and experienced great adventures—multiple rim-to-river hikes, a riverThe Adventures of Salt & Soap at Grand Canyon trip and a helicopter ride—while ultimately snuggling their way into park rangers’ hearts. Salt and Soap didn’t know they weren't allowed below the rim of the Grand Canyon—they were just puppies! Their curiosity and love of human companionship carried them through rugged hikes, riverside camping in a violent thunderstorm, the unpredictable rapids of the mighty Colorado River, ranger patrols at Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon, a harrowing helicopter ride back to the rim, and a new life on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Told with compassion and a sense of wonder by the park ranger who adopted the pups, this one-of-a-kind canine adventure tale reveals the kindness of strangers, the ruggedness of the Grand Canyon, and the joy two wiggly, perpetually happy puppies can bring to everyone they encounter.
